"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
My my my, this hits home.
So much of our lives is spent wanting to change people, letting ourselves be frustrated by what we can’t change. Spending so much time dwelling on what we want to change in others leads to heartbreak, anger, and unhappiness—and usually only for ourselves.
I have to remember to shed the negative feelings. Like the quote says, treat people as if they were what they ought to be. Don’t get frustrated at every little thing. People will rise to a higher standard if you let them.
Step back, take a breath, and treat people as if they were already the best they could be.
Another quote is speaking to me today. Mary Engelbreit always manages to brighten up my day through my daily calendar (Thanks, Mom!).
"Be a lamp, a lifeboat, or a ladder." - Rumi
There is so much darkness in the world. Hate, prejudice, sadness, poverty, crime… the list goes on and on.
The darkness can feel like it’s closing in. It’s not just the big things that are wrong; it’s in everyday things as well. It’s a bad attitude at work, a mean person on the Subway, or a rude customer at a restaurant.
And you know, especially for us individuals, there isn’t room for such negativity. It isn’t needed and can’t be accepted.
I want to jump on the S.S. Helpful and become all of the things Rumi mentions for the people around me. A lamp’s light in the darkness. A lifeboat for someone who is in need. And a ladder for someone who has fallen to climb back up.
I’m feeling positive today, readers. I spent a few minutes last night and wrote down 10 things I want to do my life, and then wrote 10 things I want to do right now, in the next few days, weeks and months.
Seeing my goals/dreams/ambitions on paper always makes it a bit easier to focus. Time is so fleeting, and I realized that I must start now. Procrastination serves no purpose, except to hurt me.
It’s time to treat people right, be helpful to those around me, and get a move on with life! There’s no time to waste.
